I just wrapped up my 7th World Education Congress by Meeting Professionals International—my first time in St. Louis, Missouri—and it reconfirmed its place as one of my favorite conferences to attend every year. As a lover of our events industry and admittedly obsessed with learning (okay, committedly obsessed!), I get genuinely excited scanning the sessions and planning my schedule each year. This year, with some transitional direction in my career, I focused more on marketing, branding, and AI topics, with some DEIA and communication sessions thrown in for good measure. Of course, I can't forget about all those wonderful networking receptions—meeting new people, sharing ideas, and catching up with peers who have grown to become genuine friends. Getting There: The 5 AM Struggle is Real Flying from the San Francisco Bay Area to St. Louis with a 5 AM alarm was pretty painful (if you know me at all, you know I'm not a morning person). But I was thankful to arrive the day prior to the start of the three-day congress. Landing at STL, I was greeted with the welcoming WEC branding at the host airport, as usual. Pro tip from someone who's learned the hard way: I've arrived on the day of kickoff a couple of times, and it makes for a very tired and jet-lagged experience that I never seem to recover from. Arriving at my hotel—Embassy Suites downtown—shortly after 4 PM worked perfectly, giving me time to grab something to eat and settle in for the evening, waking up fresh-faced and ready to go! Day 1: Stadium Lights and Learning Curves Day 1 kicked off with registration and meetups as we eased into educational programming. I sat in on sessions covering current and upcoming trends in meetings and events, what planners are looking for in venues and event design, sustainability, food and beverage options, and checked out the trade show to get the lay of the land. The opening reception took us to Busch Stadium with a fun welcome featuring cheerleaders and dancers that paved the way to our entrance. Unfortunately—and ironically after sitting through sessions about what planners and attendees are looking for, particularly regarding food and beverage and healthier options—there wasn't much I could eat without getting sick. If you didn't eat red meat or gluten, I'm sure you would have starved. Fried, processed meat foods were everywhere with nary a vegetable in sight. I broke my fast with a large scoop of guacamole before attempting to partake in foods that don't agree with me (like meatballs and a hot dog), and subsequently felt like a rock was in my stomach fairly quickly. Note to event planners everywhere: This was a perfect example of not knowing your audience. I met someone who also couldn't eat dairy or tomatoes, and I couldn't estimate how many vegetarians were present who couldn't eat much either, or my fellow gluten-free friends who have a much more difficult time processing gluten—if they're even allowed to have it touch anything else. Hopefully, enough people gave feedback on the lack of food options so mistakes like this won't happen in the future. That said, it was enjoyable to be on the field, see some fireworks, and experience a live performance by Digital Underground—I've been a fan since I was a kid—with Shock G's son performing to carry on his father's torch. The warm rain came pouring down just as we were making our way to the shuttles back to our hotels. Thankfully, I grabbed my WEC jersey to put over my head while waiting for the shuttle drivers to open the doors. A post-reception snack was definitely in order, where I was able to grab a very yummy sandwich with actual non-processed food, and topped off my night with a rosé with a good friend and peer. Day 2: Education Reigns Supreme Day 2 was all about education. While many of my sessions focused on marketing and branding with a bit of AI, I was able to sit in on a particularly impactful session: "When DEIA is a 4-Letter Word & Why Belonging Still Matters." With everything going on in our current political climate, it was refreshing to hear how our industry is still keeping focus on the important matters of inclusion and diversity. As long as there are people, there will be diversity. We are all not the same, and celebrating our differences while including everyone not only makes us unique but makes us stronger companies and creates more innovative events. And if common sense and decency doesn't convince you—DEI is good for your ROI. Let's chat about ways you can celebrate and get creative with DEI in your work or events! I also had a one-on-one chat with the fabulous career strategist and executive coach, Vimari Roman. Vimari and I originally met at MPI's WEC in 2020—yes, pandemic WEC, where the usual June conference moved to November and was held in Grapevine, Texas (it also happened to be held over election day—fun times, but that's a story for another day). Vimari has given me great support and advice over the years, and I love recommending her to others looking for new or clearer direction in their careers. You can reach out to her on LinkedIn, or I'll be happy to share the inside scoop on a special promo she's having for a limited time if you message me quickly enough. 😉 One of my favorite sessions was on branding and social media with Tisha Holman that afternoon. I enjoyed her talk and content so much I picked up her book "The Social Media Makeover" and am looking forward to diving into it! Whether we do marketing as part of our job description, own our own business, or are just looking to advance in our industries, having a personal brand and clarifying what that is—and who your target market is—will take you far! After Tisha's session, I joined one of the biggest thought leaders currently in meetings and events, Eric Rozenberg of Event Business Formula. He gave great reminders on how to manage our time efficiently and what our focus should be—not to get lost in the minutia. I jotted down notes to design my ideal week and to start listening to his podcast of the same name. This day is usually reserved for a variety of receptions including the President's dinner and the MPI Foundation's Rendezvous, and this year was no exception. I began my evening walking a couple of blocks to the DEI/Pride reception, passed by the Southwest Pacific reception with a bunch of my Northern California Chapter comrades, and headed to the Destination California reception at a pseudo-rooftop sky lounge before dinner with See Monterey at Ruth's Chris just outside of the St. Louis Arch—which made for a great photo opportunity before settling in for our long evening. Needless to say, three hours later I was ready for bed and ready for our final day. Day 3: Storytelling, Leadership, and Learning to Say No Leanne Calderwood, another great industry thought leader best known for her LinkedIn strategies, held two sessions I was able to join: one on Storytelling (because how do you create a memorable brand story or catch your audience's attention—even if it's an audience of one?) and another on Thought Leadership. Knowing your strengths is key to developing the type of leader you want to be! Ironically, one session I thought was going to be perfect for me turned out not to be. There's so much great education at WEC, it's hard to pick just one when three great options overlap. I switched one of my picks to a topic on how to say "no" more often... Having not too long ago served on three boards of directors in different industry associations while being an active volunteer for two others, saying no is something I perpetually have to work on—especially since I juggle multiple contracts, maintain multiple certifications, and continue to take at least one class per semester. Unfortunately, the main theme was aimed at people who felt like they needed to be people pleasers, not for this overachiever who needs to learn to say no to herself and not believe she can do everything at once—no matter how hard she wants to believe and try. So into another session I went after about 15 minutes. Though I had to fly back that evening and miss the closing reception (sorry, Nelly!), I did attend the closing lunch sponsored by next year's WEC host, San Antonio. The entryway of branded water and mini margaritas in tiny Patrón bottles were a nice touch. I have yet to visit San Antonio, though I have sourced there before, and am looking forward to attending next year. I'm thankful to have sat down with a representative from their CVB this past year to ask some tough questions that my clients have regarding holding meetings and events in that state—particularly if you're a woman or in the LGBTQ+ community—and I was grateful to hear about the positive support systems that San Antonio has in place to make those marginalized communities feel safe, welcome, and secure. More on that another time! The Takeaway All in all, my 7th WEC experience was a great one, with fabulous education, decent networking experiences, and thankfully—enough sleep. I love taking what I've learned and the connections I develop back to my peers and clients. As someone who's passionate about creating inclusive, innovative, and impactful events, I'm always eager to share insights and strategies that can elevate your meetings and events. Whether you're looking to incorporate more DEI elements, need help with venue sourcing, or want to discuss the latest trends in event design and attendee experience, I'm here to help you navigate the ever-evolving landscape of our industry. Did anything I shared peak your interest? Let's talk! 🎉 Ready to elevate your next meeting or event? I'd love to help you create something extraordinary. 6/25/2025 1 Comment 20 Years Ago Today...Twenty Years Forward: Celebrating FORWARD's Legacy and Honoring Two Irreplaceable Souls Twenty years ago today, on June 25th, 2005, OmniEra produced its first in-house event, FORWARD, in Oakland, California. What began as an artist management company representing over 20 diverse talents—DJs, musicians, producers, dancers, visual artists, and our dance group N-Effect—had evolved from supporting larger production companies around Northern California to a moment of realization: "Hey, we could do something ourselves!" And with the tremendous support of our music and dance community, we did exactly that. OmniEra Entertainment was born in the late spring of 2002, starting with just two fire poi performers and a dance group. As our collective grew and friendships deepened, we discovered something magical—a place where we could think outside the box, collaborate, innovate, dream, support, and grow together. Coming from San Francisco's diverse underground scene, we printed our manifesto on the back of our first event's flier: "Calling all party people... We're not here to preach how good it was 'back in the day'. We're not trying to bring back the 'old' vibe. It's time we appreciate all we have right here in our scene, make ourselves better, and move FORWARD." We couldn't have imagined the impact this event would create. While we were hoping for 250-300 people, about 500 showed up—the only time I've ever gone over capacity. But more than numbers, we created memories that have lasted decades, marking countless firsts for us, our attendees, and paving the way for FORWARD: Step 2 and Step 3 to follow, along with countless other events in the 2000s and until today. The success was remarkable, especially considering we were competing with San Francisco's Pride weekend, EDC in Southern California, and our dear friends at DOTS, who coincidentally had their event the same evening. All were greatly attended, proving the strength of our collective community. We wanted to represent the full spectrum of dance music genres and honor the various production crews we'd been part of, resulting in a lineup of 30+ DJs from across Northern California, complemented by artistic activations and performances throughout the evening. Remembering Two Irreplaceable Hearts Though dozens of people have supported OmniEra throughout these two decades, we wouldn't have survived without two extraordinarily special souls: Chris "Cloudskipper" Madore and Carlos Alfonzo Lopez, aka Suprimo. Chris became my right-hand partner starting at the end of 2003. While I handled management and harbored big dreams, he possessed the technical mastery of sound, lighting, and production that I lacked. Our partnership weathered every season—collaborations and arguments, adventures and late-night calls, being there for each other even when we drove each other crazy. He took the words from our FORWARD manifesto and transformed them into a track bearing the same name. For two solid decades, we were integral parts of each other's lives (the only person I talked on the phone with more than him was my mom), until he sadly passed away on November 30th, 2022. Carlos and I first met in 2002, though our friendship didn't deepen until a year later when he was organizing one of his events. I kept pushing him to promote in San Francisco while he was still living in the South Bay—a dynamic that would define our friendship for the next two decades. We constantly pushed each other, supported each other's growth, served as each other's biggest cheerleaders, and navigated life's countless twists and turns together. In 2006, we fell in love with wine at a downtown SF wine bar, inspiring us to create "Wine Snob SF"—a blog that evolved from the MySpace era through Instagram, with a website that was unfortunately taken down this past year following his unexpected passing on April 11th, 2024. He was my number one person and partner in life. Moving Forward with Their Spirit
The loss of these two people creates a heartache I can never fully overcome. Part of me wanted to quit everything—OmniEra after Chris, and everything after Carlos. But over this past year, I've learned that although they're no longer physically here, they remain with me. I feel their support and encouragement in my mind and heart constantly, guiding me forward. I wouldn't be who I am today, and OmniEra wouldn't exist, without these two extraordinary people. My love and loyalty to them endure eternally, and we will always dedicate and remember Chris and Carlos in everything OmniEra becomes, no matter what direction or turns our future may take. As we celebrate twenty years of FORWARD today, we honor not just an event or a milestone, but the beautiful souls who made it all possible and continue to inspire us to keep moving forward. Thank you everyone for all of your support, always. ~ Samantha T. Marie This last month, I had the incredible privilege of participating in Skift Meetings' webinar "The Wellness Intersection" – a conversation that perfectly marries my two greatest passions: events and wellness. As someone who lives and breathes both industries, I was thrilled to dive deep into what wellness integration actually looks like when you're designing meaningful experiences for meeting and event attendees. The webinar tackled the big question that keeps event professionals up at night: Is wellness an expense or an investment? Spoiler alert: when done thoughtfully, it's absolutely an investment with measurable ROI. I was honored to share the virtual stage with Sepideh Eivaz, founder of Dawn of the Earth, with the expert moderation of Andrea Doyle, Executive Editor at Skift Meetings, and Barbara Scofiddio, Editor at Skift Meetings. A huge thank you to our sponsor, Caesars Entertainment, for supporting this important conversation. Breaking the One-Size-Fits-All Wellness Myth Here's the reality check we all need: wellness is not one-size-fits-all. So why do we keep designing wellness programming as if everyone is a 6 AM runner or devoted yogi? Not everyone bounces out of bed ready for sunrise meditation. Some of us aren't morning people at all, and let's be honest – many attendees are battling jet lag from crossing time zones to get to your event. The key shift? Design your day around managing energy, not just time. We're already cramming a lot into our event schedules. The real question becomes: what's going to keep attendees most attentive, efficient, and engaged? If your event goal is meaningful connection, learning, or collaboration, then keeping attendees happy, healthy, awake, energized, and included isn't just nice-to-have – it's mission-critical. Wellness Goes Way Beyond Food and Fitness Yes, we absolutely need to rethink those morning pastries and sugar crashes waiting to happen. Swapping high-sugar snacks for vegetarian proteins and nutrients that maintain steady glucose levels is Wellness 101. But that's just the beginning. Consider this scenario: You've just served a substantial lunch, and your next agenda item is an afternoon keynote in a windowless ballroom. Can you practically see your attendees slipping into food comas? This is prime time for strategic intervention. Instead of fighting biology, work with it. Insert a 20-30 minute energizing activity – maybe a group walk or even a Zumba shake-out session to get blood flowing, improve digestion, and boost alertness. For attendees with physical limitations or those who prefer gentler options, offer guided meditation or intentional mindfulness activities that refocus and reenergize minds. Creating Space for Every Attendee Type Here's something we don't talk about enough: not everyone is an extrovert. Many attendees may be neurodivergent, finding crowded rooms, fluorescent lighting, and constant noise overwhelming rather than energizing. One of my favorite inclusive design solutions? Create a dedicated reprieve room – a quiet space with soft lighting where phones stay outside and people can reset for a few minutes. This isn't just beneficial for introverts or neurodivergent attendees; it's a gift everyone can use when they need to recharge. The Ripple Effect of Mindful Attendee Care When you prioritize attendees' mental wellbeing, something magical happens. You see increased engagement, deeper interactions, stronger team building, better retention, and attendees who genuinely feel valued and seen. Think about it: how often do people leave conferences feeling drained, exhausted, and needing days to recover? What if they actually felt rejuvenated instead? Imagine attendees returning home energized, having eaten well, slept better, and stayed mentally focused throughout your program. How do you think they'd feel about attending next year? What stories would they tell about your event? Small Changes, Big Impact
Even something as simple as room gifts can make a difference. That standard box of chocolates? It might not work for attendees managing high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or other health conditions that are increasingly common as our industry demographics shift into their 40s, 50s, and beyond. Instead, consider gifts that pamper wellbeing – wellness teas they can enjoy in their hotel room, soothing face or foot masks, or other items that support their health journey. These thoughtful touches show you see your attendees as whole people, not just conference participants. The Bottom Line: ROI That Actually Matters Here's what excites me most about wellness-integrated event design: the ROI isn't just about attendee experience and retention (though those benefits are substantial). It also impacts your actual bottom line. Healthy alternatives often cost less than their processed counterparts. Many wellness activities can be implemented at low or no additional cost. When you thoughtfully sprinkle wellness offerings throughout your event, you're able to meet most attendees where they are with their individual wellness needs and desires, maintaining energy and motivation throughout the entire program. The Inclusive Design Imperative Event design with wellness in mind is incomplete if it's not holistically and inclusively planned. This means meeting attendees where they are, acknowledging that we all have different wellness needs, preferences, and limitations. The goal isn't to create a wellness retreat (unless that's specifically your event type). It's about weaving considerate, energizing, and inclusive elements throughout your existing program design to enhance rather than overshadow your core objectives. Let's Continue the Conversation Wellness-integrated event design isn't just a trend – it's the future of creating experiences that truly serve our attendees. I'm passionate about helping event professionals discover practical, budget-friendly ways to implement these strategies. Have questions about integrating wellness into your next event? Curious about specific strategies for your attendee demographic? Want to brainstorm inclusive design solutions? I'd love to chat! Share your experiences in the comments – I'd love to learn from your insights too! We're back! After a whirlwind May that had me stepping away from the blog to handle all the chaos that comes with that time of year, I'm excited to dive back in. There was PCMANCC's annual education conference L.E.A.P. in Sacramento (I was Chair of L.E.A.P. a couple years ago), Mother's Day weekend, EDC Las Vegas, BottleRock in Napa, MPINCC's Corks & Forks, and a 25 Year anniversary party celebrating some epic times in San Francisco's music and dance culture. What better way to return than by talking about the destination I should have covered months ago... This OmniBlog has been going strong for almost half a year now, and while we've explored incredible wellness retreats and incentive destinations up and down the western coast, there's one glaring omission that has me scratching my head: How have I not written about Las Vegas yet?! Those of you who know me are probably shocked. Those who don't know me yet might be thinking, "Why Vegas?" Trust me, I've heard it all over the past 20+ years: "You don't drink, you don't gamble—Vegas isn't your thing." Well, I've been changing minds longer than some of you have been alive. And though I may be getting older in another state, that doesn't mean I don't know what's happening in Vegas life. Because let me tell you—it's been my second home for at least two decades. I'm more up-to-date with Vegas restaurants than those in my own hometown these days. I've been trying to move there permanently since before the pandemic, and at this point, they should just give me honorary residency because I'm there at least every other month. The Vegas Series Begins Obviously, I can't give you a complete Vegas overview in one blog post. Will I drip-feed you content over a month? A season? A year? Let's see how this flows. What I can give you is the best of the best—the experiences that never disappoint. Let's be real: my favorite thing to do in Vegas is eat. If you're a foodie or someone who aspires to be one, this is your destination. How could I live on a coast and yet have the best crab legs of my life in Vegas? Maestro's Ocean Club at Crystals delivers fluffy, buttery heaven alongside those Instagram-worthy smoky dry ice cocktails. Not to be outdone by Ocean Prime just a stone's throw away. "But aren't those chains?" you might ask. Hate to break it to you, but not all chains are created equal. Case in point: my #1 most recommended restaurant ever--Vic & Anthony's at the Golden Nugget. It took me YEARS before I finally brought a group there circa 2014 because, yes, a chain steakhouse in downtown old Vegas seemed questionable. I was seriously mistaken. For the past decade, I've made it a point to dine there at least once during my birthday week and literally any other time I can sneak in a dinner—whether I'm there for an event, a conference, or flying solo. They're probably the reason I won't give up red meat completely, and their wine list is to die for. (Please tell me y'all know I know my wine, right?) Beyond the Dining Scene And the shows? Before I get to the really good stuff, let me say this: my favorite Cirque shows aren't necessarily the top-tier headliners (though those are great in their own right). I completely understand why Blue Man Group has been around for over two decades, and I'm hoping to catch Absinthe again soon. Let's talk museums. Everyone's different, but I love history and lights, so the Neon Museum Boneyard tour—especially at night—has been a favorite for years. Do the Mob Museum and hit the underground Speakeasy while you're at it. The Quick Vegas Hit I was recently asked by someone with a 6-hour layover what to show a Vegas first-timer. That was tough because you need to account for travel time to and from the airport, plus the never-ending construction reality of Vegas. Here's what I recommended: Take a car directly from the airport to the High Roller at the Linq Promenade. If you're over 21 and willing to have a drink, I highly recommend the High Roller Happy Half Hour—open bar for the 30-minute adventure with a much better vibe than the regular excursion. You can see SO much of Las Vegas from that height, including the Bellagio fountains. It's a must. I probably have eight annual photos of friends there during my birthday celebrations. After the High Roller, walk across to the Bellagio and visit their Conservatory of Flowers that changes every season. If you're looking to gamble, the less expensive hotels like Harrah's and Flamingo might be in your favor. If you're looking for some more higher end tables with a lux vibe, the Wynn, Cosmopolitan, and Venetian are all within walking distance. With more time? I absolutely suggest hitting Fremont Street at night—the Golden Nugget has that famous pool with a water slide through a shark tank (more on that later), and the Zoomline on SlotZilla is currently the best zipline experience in Vegas. What's Coming Next
Don't just take my word for these recommendations—but definitely hit me up to see what would be best for YOU! Over the next few months, I'll be diving deep into everything that makes Vegas the perfect destination for both wellness escapes and unforgettable incentive experiences. Yes, you read that right—Vegas wellness is absolutely a thing, and I can't wait to show you how. Welcome back to OmniBlog, and get ready for some serious Vegas insider knowledge from your girl who's been loving this city for 25+ years. What aspect of Vegas are you most curious about? Drop me a line—I'd love to hear what you want to explore first! 5/5/2025 0 Comments Beyond Balloons & Breaking Bad: Albuquerque’s Unexpected Magic for Retreats& Group TravelConfession time: I wasn't quite sure what to expect for my first visit to Albuquerque. My imagination painted a rather... rustic picture of rural landscapes, tumbleweeds dancing across wide-open spaces, and perhaps a horse or two nodding sagely in the distance. But something about New Mexico's whispered promises of rich culture, wellness opportunities, and (let's be honest) incredible food had me counting down the days until my discovery began. Having a focus on retreats and wellness as top priorities for event and travel planning, ABQ simply had to make my must-visit list. Spoiler alert: it did NOT disappoint! Beyond the Breaking Bad Backdrop Nestled about an hour from Santa Fe at 5,000 feet elevation, Albuquerque offers that perfect high-desert climate that makes wellness enthusiasts swoon. Quick tip: if you're sensitive to elevation or have heart considerations, you might feel the altitude more than expected. But don't let that deter you! (For the full story of my sleep-deprived, heart-pumping adventure—and how I conquered it--*Click Here for my short blog post!* Wine O'Clock in the Desert? Absolutely! My journey kicked off at Casa Rondeña Winery, where I learned something that knocked my California-living socks off: New Mexico is actually America's oldest wine-producing region! While Napa Valley gets all the glory (and I live just minutes away), Spanish settlers were introducing vines here back in the 1600s, establishing a tradition that predates California's wine scene by centuries. The award-winning wines paired with a divine cheese and charcuterie platter left me wishing I could linger longer among the uniquely tiled event spaces. My wine-snob standards were genuinely impressed—and that's saying something! Where Ancient Meets Luxurious Hotel Chaco became my luxurious home base, and oh my goodness, what a find for wellness enthusiasts and incentive groups! This AAA Four Diamond boutique retreat pays homage to Chaco Culture National Historical Park (established by Teddy Roosevelt in 1907) while seamlessly blending ancient architectural inspiration with modern luxury. The regional art throughout the property tells stories of cultural heritage, while the rooms offer stunning views of city and mountains alike. Pro tip: The rooftop bar, Level 5, is just an elevator ride away from your room and serves up panoramic vistas that will have your Instagram followers green with envy. Dinner and Play—But Make It Interactive Ever had your dinner table respond to your hand movements with light projections? No? Well, neither had I until Electric Playhouse blew my mind with their immersive dining experience. This technological playground combines interactive art with innovative cuisine for a dinner that's part meal, part entertainment, and entirely unforgettable. As Albuquerque positions itself as an innovation hub, this venue offers the perfect engaging environment for team-building events that break the mold. After dinner, we unleashed our inner children playing interactive games that had us laughing, competing, and connecting in ways you simply can't replicate in a traditional meeting space. Up, Up and Away! Did you know Albuquerque hosts the world's largest hot air balloon festival? For nine spectacular days each October, the skies transform into a kaleidoscope of hundreds of balloons during the International Balloon Fiesta. While my personal fear of heights kept my feet firmly planted on terra firma, I'd be thrilled to connect your groups with Rainbow Ryders for an unforgettable balloon adventure soaring above the Rio Grande Valley and Sandia Mountains. Some memories are worth conquering fears for—or in my case, living vicariously through braver souls! Los Poblanos: A Retreat Paradise with Farm-to-Table Heaven If I could wave my magic event planner wand and create the perfect retreat venue from scratch, it might look like Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm. This 25-acre sanctuary of breathtaking beauty had me at hello with its lavender fields, majestic cottonwood trees, and meticulously maintained gardens that instantly transport visitors away from everyday stress. As someone laser-focused on creating exceptional retreat experiences, this boutique property isn't just a venue—it's a destination revelation. The historic inn offers 50 gorgeously appointed rooms (you can do a full buyout!), each thoughtfully designed to honor the property's architectural heritage while providing all the modern amenities your discerning attendees expect. For corporate retreats, Los Poblanos offers intimate meeting spaces bathed in natural light that inspire creativity and connection. Imagine your leadership team strategizing in the Farm Shop Conference Room or gathering for breakthrough conversations in the serene Hacienda Sala. The property's abundant outdoor spaces create natural settings for team-building activities, mindfulness sessions, or simply allowing executives the breathing room to think differently. Wellness practitioners will find themselves in absolute heaven here. The property's organic lavender farm isn't just for show—it provides essential oils for their spa treatments and products that retreat attendees can experience firsthand. Morning yoga among the lavender fields, guided meditation walks through the gardens, and farm-to-massage-table treatments create a holistic wellness experience that city venues simply cannot replicate. And the FOOD! Oh my goodness, the utterly ah-mazing brunch at Campo, their James Beard-nominated restaurant, deserves its own paragraph of adoration. The farm-to-table cuisine featured ingredients grown literally steps from our table, creating a dining experience that nourished both body and soul. Your culinary-minded attendees will be talking about these meals long after the retreat ends. What makes Los Poblanos truly special for events is how it effortlessly combines purpose with pleasure. Groups can incorporate agricultural experiences, sustainability tours, and artisanal workshops into their programs, adding educational components that align perfectly with corporate social responsibility initiatives. I'm already plotting multiple returns—this is the kind of place where I can envision bringing groups ranging from tech company executives seeking strategic clarity to wellness retreats focused on mindful rejuvenation. Trust me when I say: this property needs to be at the top of your ABQ consideration list! Send me a quick note if you'd like to learn more! Convention Center with Actual Good Food (Not a Typo!) The 600,000+ square-foot Albuquerque Convention Center surprised me in the best possible way. Beyond its impressive spaces, it features something unique among convention centers nationwide: an in-progress 2,500-square-foot fresco celebrating New Mexico's wine heritage. But let's talk about what really matters—the food! Convention center cuisine typically ranks somewhere between "airplane meal" and "sad desk lunch" on the culinary excitement scale. Not here! Each section showcased genuinely impressive food stations that elevated the experience from functional to memorable. Oh, and don't miss the Breaking Bad statue for a quick photo op! With a variety of meeting, event, and theatre spaces, there's no shortage of what you can create here. Hotel Highlights Worth Noting My hotel tours included some absolute gems: The Clyde Hotel honors former mayor and governor Clyde Tingley with modern elegance and subtle Art Deco touches. Perfectly positioned across from the convention center, it's ideal for conference attendees. (Contact me for insider tips on securing rooms here for your groups!) Hotel Andaluz, the city's first boutique hotel built in 1939 by Conrad Hilton himself, blends historical significance with modern sustainability as a LEED Gold-certified property. I even got to peek into the very room where Mr. Hilton and Zsa Zsa Gabor spent their honeymoon! Getting My Kicks (and Shakes) on Route 66 Albuquerque claims the longest urban stretch of the iconic Route 66, which celebrates its centennial in 2026. The 66 Diner, housed in a converted Phillips 66 service station, transported me straight back to the 1950s with its neon lights and retro vibes. Despite my usually strict health-conscious diet, some experiences demand exceptions—and their towering old-fashioned milkshakes definitely qualified! Paired with chile fries (when in New Mexico...), this nostalgic pitstop was worth every delicious calorie. Mix & Mingle at Sawmill Market While exploring Sawmill Market, Albuquerque's lively food hall housed in a beautifully repurposed lumber facility, I discovered Flora—a venue offering something your groups will absolutely love. They host curated margarita classes where participants learn the art of crafting the perfect margarita with unique flavors and fresh ingredients. Just imagine your team bonding over shakers and salt rims while a skilled mixologist guides them through New Mexico's vibrant cocktail culture! This interactive activity provides the perfect blend of fun, local flavor, and team building that can easily be incorporated into your group's itinerary. A Grand Finale That Stole My Heart: Flamenco!
The absolute highlight of my ABQ adventure came at Tablao Flamenco Albuquerque inside Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town. This wasn't just dinner and a show—it was a soul-stirring cultural immersion that captured my dancer's heart completely. The intimate venue sets the stage for world-class flamenco performers whose passion radiates through every stomp, clap, and dramatic gesture. I was even invited to participate in an interactive experience on stage (perfect for groups wanting to see who has the best rhythm!). The performance was so inspiring that I immediately signed up for a tap class upon returning home. (Little-known fact: tap dancing was my first love at age three, and I taught it well into my twenties before taking a hiatus.) For groups seeking a memorable evening that combines cultural depth with pure entertainment, this experience simply must cap off their Albuquerque visit. The authenticity and artistic excellence will leave even your most well-traveled attendees thoroughly impressed. The Verdict? ABQ is the Ultimate Surprise Package In short, Albuquerque delivers the perfect blend of wellness opportunities, cultural richness, and culinary delights for groups seeking something beyond the ordinary. It offers authentic experiences that connect visitors to both ancient traditions and innovative futures—all wrapped in that magical New Mexican sunshine. Even my Napa-adjacent wine palate was thoroughly impressed by America's oldest wine region! Who knew? Let's chat! *Drop me a line here,* and I'll help you craft an Albuquerque experience that will have your attendees talking for years to come. Looking for a destination that combines wellness, culture, and unforgettable experiences for your next event? Let OmniEra create your perfect Albuquerque adventure! Extra special thanks to Smart Meetings and Visit Albuquerque for their hospitality to make many of my discoveries possible. We're back! After a whirlwind May that had me stepping away from the blog to handle all the chaos that comes with that time of year, I'm excited to dive back in. May had PCMANCC's annual flagship education program L.E.A.P. (I was Chair a couple years ago), Mother's Day weekend, ending of Spring semester, EDC, BottleRock, and quite the epic 25 Year Anniversary of a San Francisco legendary music event. Because let me tell you—it's been my second home for the last two decades. On the more lux side? The Wynn, Venetian, and Cosmopolitan are all within walking distance. With more time? I absolutely suggest hitting Fremont Street at night—the Golden Nugget has that famous pool with a water slide through a shark tank (more on that later), and the Zoomline on SlotZilla is currently the best zipline experience in Vegas!
Welcome back to OmniBlog, and get ready for some serious Vegas insider knowledge from your girl who's been living this city for 25+ years. What aspect of Vegas are you most curious about? Drop me a line—I'd love to hear what you want to explore first! 4/28/2025 0 Comments Sailing Through Choppy Political Waters: The Savvy Event Planner's Guide to 2025Hey there, event industry rockstars! ✨ Let's face it – planning amazing experiences in today's climate requires more than just knowing the perfect appetizer pairings or how to negotiate with venues (though those skills are still 100% essential). It's become a statement – sometimes one your client may not intend to make! Some savvy approaches:
Building Bridges, Not Walls Your event might bring together people from across the political spectrum (yes, even Uncle Bob and Cousin Sarah who can't be seated together at Thanksgiving). This is actually an opportunity to shine! Try these approaches:

Thanks to the incredible Justin Cox from the Santa Fe CVB, who graciously collected me from Albuquerque airport and played personal tour guide during our hour-long drive into the city. Pro tip: While Santa Fe does have its own airport, it's quite small with limited flights, so most visitors fly into ABQ. During our drive, Justin shared fascinating tidbits about the region's surprisingly high elevation (more on my battle with that later!), the nearby southern Rocky Mountains where you can actually ski (yes, it snows there!), the reservations along our route, the "other" Las Vegas in New Mexico, and the Sandia mountain range – meaning "watermelon" in Spanish due to the stunning sunsets that paint the hills in vibrant watermelon hues. Entering downtown Santa Fe felt like stepping through a time portal into a different era and culture – one I'd only glimpsed in films before. Home to America's oldest church, the city's adobe pueblo buildings line narrow streets and rarely exceed 3-4 stories. I'll admit, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from New Mexico's capital – perhaps taller, more modern structures with a typical city vibe? Instead, I was delightfully surprised by how dedicated this wonderful town is to preserving its deep cultural heritage and history. Beyond downtown, the surrounding areas feel refreshingly rural, with expansive open spaces, horses, and charming ranch-style homes. Where to Stay: Santa Fe's Most Group-Friendly Accommodations The accommodations in Santa Fe beautifully balance luxury with cultural authenticity. Hotel Santa Fe, Inn & Spa at Loretto, and Inn on the Alameda all deliver the high-end amenities you'd expect while maintaining the area's cozy cultural charm. My brief stay at Las Palomas was genuinely impressive. Perfect for slightly larger groups by Santa Fe standards, this wellness-focused resort (which is 100% up my alley!) offers complimentary yoga sessions and healthy breakfasts at their entirely non-smoking property. All guest rooms feature fireplaces, and visitors have access to a heated pool area and fitness center. With ample event and meeting space for groups up to 120, plus 63 sleeping rooms just three short blocks from walkable downtown, it's brilliantly positioned. They even provide complimentary shuttles for nearby destinations, including downtown transport when the weather turns chilly – as it certainly did during my visit! From check-in to bedtime, complimentary water and teas are readily available, and their hospitality is genuinely unmatched. The remainder of my stay was at La Fonda on the Plaza in their downtown square and conference center. Wow! What an incredible location with a fascinating history! La Fonda occupies a treasured place in Santa Fe's story – part of a rich hospitality tradition predating American independence. City records indicate it sits on the site of the town's first inn, established when Spaniards founded the city in 1607, making it America's oldest hotel corner! The most memorable Santa Fe gatherings happen at La Fonda, with over 20,000 square feet of elegant event space across eight breathtaking venues, suitable for any occasion. Authentic architectural touches like hammered tin chandeliers, inviting kiva fireplaces, and handcrafted terracotta tiles provide a genuine Santa Fe experience, while modern amenities such as WiFi throughout and a 24-hour business center ensure seamless professional functionality. Beyond the stunning Southwestern-decorated event spaces, La Fonda offers the most delectable catering in Santa Fe. From classic New Mexican fare to hearty Italian specialties, their robust culinary selection can immerse your guests in regional culture or take them on a themed culinary journey. I stayed in the property's newest section, the exclusive Terrace Inn. Its 15 lavish rooms and suites feature stylishly appointed furnishings that blend minimalist, clean lines with cultural elements and original regional art, including Navajo Chief hand-woven headboards and refinished 100-year-old heart pine flooring. Each room opens onto a private patio or balcony overlooking either the beautiful Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis de Assisi or the historic Loretto Chapel and sun-drenched Sangre de Cristo mountains. The Terrace also has its own dedicated and exceptionally hospitable concierge. Exploring the Downtown Plaza La Fonda sits directly on the Plaza, a vibrant gathering place for shoppers and culture enthusiasts alike. Needing shoes that could transition from networking reception to gym time (and finding the perfect pair!), I window-shopped the area until catching sight of someone wearing a work shirt that said "Olive Oils and Balsamics." My mission became finding this place! After tasting a delicious selection of flavored olive oils and balsamics, I decided my carry-on would become a checked bag, as I simply had to bring some bottles home. The area features numerous shops offering jewelry, turquoise, and other handcrafted items that locals proudly promote. I was particularly delighted not to spot a single Starbucks or chain fast-food restaurant anywhere in the vicinity. Unforgettable Group Activities The Sky Railway provides a fantastically unique activity for both individuals and groups. Born in 2020 from the ashes of Santa Fe Southern, prominent local residents joined forces to preserve the historic 141-year-old railroad. Led by a creative team including George R.R. Martin, Sky Railway crafts entertainment adventure rail journeys that make it one of the most original short-line railroads in the country – perfectly befitting "The City Different." You can even customize activities and music throughout the train's various covered and open cars! A Natural Sanctuary for Wellness Retreats
Santa Fe's unique energy makes it an exceptional destination for wellness-focused gatherings. The region's pristine high-desert landscape provides a natural sanctuary that instantly decompresses even the most stressed executives. Local resorts have embraced this tranquility, incorporating indigenous healing traditions alongside modern wellness approaches. From outdoor yoga sessions against the backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo mountains to specialized spa treatments utilizing local ingredients like blue corn, piñon, and sage, Santa Fe offers immersive healing experiences rooted in centuries of tradition. Many properties feature dedicated wellness spaces that seamlessly blend indoor comfort with outdoor beauty through floor-to-ceiling windows capturing those famous New Mexico sunsets. Beyond scheduled activities, the city's walkable layout, clean mountain air, and slower pace naturally encourage mindfulness—participants find themselves naturally disconnecting from digital distractions and reconnecting with themselves and their colleagues in more meaningful ways. For corporate groups seeking true reset and rejuvenation, Santa Fe's wellness offerings can be easily customized into your itinerary, whether as dedicated sessions or woven throughout your entire program as a consistent theme of balance and restoration. A Quick Note on Elevation One important heads-up: Santa Fe sits 7,000 feet above sea level, and while I've never had issues with elevation before (I live just hours from Tahoe, after all), this was a different story. During daylight hours, my symptoms were barely noticeable (perhaps a minor headache my first day), but nights were challenging. Returning to my hotel room by 9pm meant lying awake until at least 1am with my heart pounding harder and faster than normal, affecting my sleep and leaving me somewhat drained the next day. Fortunately, I had brought some Ylang Ylang essential oil that helped lower my heart rate a bit. If you have blood pressure issues, consider this your friendly warning! Despite this unexpected challenge, it absolutely won't deter me from visiting again. I'm a devoted fan after my first trip and look forward to bringing more retreats and corporate groups to the area very soon. Why Santa Fe Should Be on Your Event Planning Radar Santa Fe offers historic surroundings, enduring cultures, timeless beauty, and sophisticated cuisine and hospitality, making it perfect for your next meeting, conference, or convention. Founded in 1610 and known as "The City Different," Santa Fe is America's oldest state capital. The city's signature adobe architecture, tree-shaded Plaza, and winding streets make it feel more like an international destination than one of America's most historic places. The friendly locals, relaxed pace, pleasant climate, and warm hospitality make this distinctive city one of the country's top destinations. I simply cannot overstate how thoroughly I enjoyed my first (and long overdue) visit to Santa Fe – from the laid-back atmosphere and captivating pueblo buildings to the absolutely mouthwatering New Mexican cuisine, art, and rich culture. As a passionate member of SITE Northern California (Society for Incentive Travel Excellence) and someone who's navigated her own health journey, I can confirm that when wellness meets incentive travel, magic happens. And sometimes, that magic involves wine. (Hey, it's Napa, after all!) When Passion Meets Purpose My journey to wellness advocacy wasn't exactly straightforward. After battling severe health issues in my late 20s/early 30s, I emerged with a newfound perspective and a mission: to integrate genuine wellness experiences into the travel and events industry. Beginning my wellness certifications in 2013 and re-entering the events world in 2016 after a five-year "health sabbatical," I've been on a mission to redefine what wellness means in the context of exceptional travel experiences. Fast forward to 2020, and I proudly added both CITP (Certified Incentive Travel Professional) and CMP (Certified Meeting Professional) to my credentials. Because if you're going to advocate for something, you might as well become an expert, right? SITE NCC: Where Wellness Gets Serious Play As part of SITE's Northern California chapter, I've found my tribe within the Social Impact Committee, where we focus on wellness, sustainability, and philanthropy. This isn't your typical "let's feel good about ourselves" committee—we're committed to creating meaningful change in how incentive travel approaches wellbeing. In March, SITENCC hosted an educational program at Silverado Resort in Napa that showcased exactly what wellness in incentive travel can (and should!) look like. The day kicked off with a thought-provoking panel discussion over brunch, followed by immersive wellness activities that had everyone forgetting to check their phones, outside of taking pictures. If that's not success, I don't know what is. The Well-X Lounge deserves its own paragraph (and quite possibly its own fan club). I could have spent all day in this wellness wonderland! Massage stations for every body part imaginable, intuitive card readings (my "Integrity" card gently suggested I might need to dial back the multitasking and embrace more meditation—message received, universe), facial treatments, wellness shots, and an activity on another room was - yes—wine tasting with chef-prepared bites. Because balance. Silverado Resort: Where Wellness Meets Wow Factor If you haven't visited Silverado Resort lately, let me paint you a picture: nestled in the heart of Napa Valley, this property masterfully balances rustic charm with sophisticated luxury. And those recently upgraded sleeping rooms? Complete with actual, real-life fireplaces that make you want to curl up with a good book and never leave. What makes Silverado particularly spectacular for wellness-focused events is their thoughtful attention to detail. Their culinary team understands that "healthy options" doesn't mean "sad salad in the corner." During our event, the variety of nourishing yet indulgent food options throughout the day kept everyone energized without that dreaded mid-afternoon slump. Though the pickleball activity had to be nixed due to weather, the yoga session was in full effect. Here's the thing about incorporating wellness into your incentive travel programs: it's not just a nice-to-have anymore; it's essential. When attendees feel their best physically and mentally, they engage more deeply with the experience you've created. They remember it longer. They return to work genuinely recharged rather than needing a vacation from their vacation. Silverado Resort understands this intrinsically. Beyond your basic fitness center, the property offers championship golf courses, a world-class spa, tennis and pickleball courts, diverse dining options, cooking classes, wine tours, and even hot air balloon rides a stones throw away. All this while providing versatile event spaces that can accommodate groups of various sizes. Taking Wellness Beyond the Buzzword
What I've learned through my work and my own health journey is that true wellness isn't about checking boxes—it's about creating environments where people can reconnect with themselves and each other. It's about understanding that sometimes wellness looks like a sunrise yoga session, and sometimes it looks like a perfectly paired wine tasting followed by a massage. Special thanks to Fatima Sousi from SF Travel for being my personal host for this transformative day, and a shout-out to Claus Porto for the luxurious gifting soaps that reminded us all that self-care continues long after the event ends. Ready to elevate your next incentive travel program with thoughtful wellness integration that your attendees will actually enjoy? Whether you're considering Silverado Resort, another Napa gem, or destinations beyond, I'd love to help you craft the perfect wellness-focused itinerary that keeps everyone engaged, energized, and eagerly awaiting your next event. Because when wellness is done right, nobody misses the sad salad. Promise. While summer in Sonoma certainly has its charms, there's something undeniably magical about this wine country paradise when the temperatures drop. As your resident event and travel planning guru with an eye for the extraordinary, let me share why Sonoma County should be at the top of your cool-weather destination list – especially if you're craving boutique luxury experiences that go beyond the typical wine tour. The Stavrand: Where Luxury Meets Laid-Back Perfection Let's start with a property that stole my heart faster than you can say "pour me another glass." The Stavrand isn't just a hotel – it's a six-acre sanctuary that earned its Michelin Guide "exceptional" Two Key rating for good reason. With just 21 rooms, this intimate estate is the perfect buyout opportunity for private retreats. Corporate teams seeking a transformative offsite or social groups celebrating special occasions will find themselves enveloped in attentive yet refreshingly unpretentious service. My favorite touches? The daily welcome wine tasting happy hour from 5-6pm in their lobby (because why wait until dinner?) and the adorable s'mores kits for their fire pits. Pro tip: If you charm the staff, they might even open their wine tasting bar exclusively for your group after hours. Talk about VIP treatment! The property's Russian River location puts you just ten minutes from charming Guerneville and within easy reach of coastal beaches, redwood hikes, and some of California's finest tasting rooms. But honestly, with the level of high-touch hospitality we experienced, you might never want to leave the grounds. Forest bathing in the redwoods, anyone? The Madrona: Where History Meets Contemporary Elegance For those who appreciate properties with a story to tell, The Madrona wraps you in magic from the moment you arrive. This stately manor welcomes curious travelers with an experience drenched in beauty, style, and thoughtful details. I stayed in one of the carriage house rooms, which featured an artistic foyer wall design made with actual horse hair (talk about conversation starter!), heated bathroom floors (heaven during cooler months), a charming old-time radio, and fresh oranges plucked straight from property trees. The restaurant boasts two Michelin stars, making it a culinary destination in its own right. Between gorgeous spaces perfect for intimate events and the possibility of learning to saber a champagne bottle (yes, that happened!), The Madrona delivers unforgettable experiences alongside its impeccable wine list. And if you're really lucky, you might find a whiskey and chocolate pairing waiting in your quarters after dinner. Farmhouse Inn: Authentic Sonoma Luxury with Deep Roots For good reason, Farmhouse Inn has been rated among California's top hotels and was once ranked #8 in the world by Travel + Leisure. Beyond the luxurious accommodations – ranging from spacious suites with vaulted ceilings and woodland views to charming, cozy retreats – what makes this property special is its authentic connection to Sonoma. Owned by fifth-generation Sonoma farmers still deeply involved in the property experience, Farmhouse Inn offers connections that chain hotels simply can't match. A stay here feels less like checking into a luxury resort and more like joining a particularly stylish family with exceptional taste. Don't miss the Wellness Barn, where holistic treatments incorporating local remedies provide the perfect antidote to our chaotic world. It's a space designed for slowing down, connecting with nature, and finding your unique balance – essential components for any successful retreat. DaVero Farms & Winery: Where Sustainability Meets Absolutely Adorable Pigs If you're looking for a venue that combines wine, food, and nature with a commitment to sustainability, DaVero Farms & Winery in Healdsburg delivers all that and more. Their biodynamic approach to farming and traditional winemaking methods produce Italian varietal wines and olive oils that truly express the terroir. Their versatile spaces accommodate up to 200 guests, making it ideal for celebrations, corporate events, or educational seminars. But let's get to what you really want to know – yes, their pigs are ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE! I'm also still dreaming about their flavored olive oils and balsamics available in the gift shop. Trust me on this: do not leave without experiencing their wine and cheese & charcuterie pairings. Beg, if you have to, but best to plan ahead! Vintners Resort: The Quintessential Wine Country Sanctuary With 92 acres at your disposal, Vintners Resort transforms into your private sanctuary, complete with an Event Center boasting 10,000 square feet of indoor space plus gorgeous event lawns and outdoor venues that can host up to 250 guests. For the ultimate exclusive experience, their 78-room property is available for buyouts, giving your group complete access to restaurants, spa, and recreational amenities. Fill a relaxing day with strolls through the vineyard trail, rejuvenating spa treatments, and a friendly bocce ball competition. Don't miss John Ash, one of Sonoma's pioneering farm-to-table restaurants overlooking vineyard views. Lunch was delicious and the scene was breathtaking, even on a cloudy day! Culinary Adventures: The Matheson & Roof 106 No luxury retreat is complete without exceptional dining, and The Matheson and Roof 106 in Healdsburg Plaza deliver in spades. Chefs Nate Davis and Dustin Valette have created a kitchen of creative collaboration, with an ever-changing menu reflecting micro-seasonal offerings that celebrate the land. For a truly special evening with your group, opt for the chef's menu with wine pairings – your guests will thank you later. And you absolutely must try their clarified margarita – so crystal clear it looks like water but packs all the flavor – you have to taste it to believe it! The Mezzanine private dining space, floating above the main kitchen, provides the perfect vibrant yet intimate setting for winemaker dinners or corporate gatherings. Ready to Elevate Your Sonoma Experience?
Whether you're planning a corporate retreat that actually gets results, a luxury incentive trip that motivates top performers, or a wellness getaway that rejuvenates body and soul, Sonoma County offers boutique experiences that go far beyond wine tasting (though there's plenty of that too!). The cooler months reveal a different side of wine country – one where fireside chats, misty morning walks, and intimate indoor gatherings create connections that last long after the trip ends. Ready to craft your perfect Sonoma County experience? As someone who's explored these hidden gems firsthand, I'd love to help you discover the perfect property and experiences for your next event or retreat. Because when it comes to luxury travel planning, sometimes you need someone who knows which pigs are the cutest and where to find that perfect glass of pinot noir.
