These next few weeks we'll be focusing on destinations that highlight some of our favorite attributes of events we specialize in: Incentive Travel, Wellness, and Retreats of all kinds... I’ve been to San Diego a lot, and much more frequently the last couple of years. Coronado though - the mysterious island I could see from San Diego’s shore - was elusive to me. Appearing to be a place I SHOULD know: sunny Southern California, steps away from Mexico, possibly a quiet retreat area but close enough to a metropolitan city where a vibrant nightlife and accessible transportation were possible - it climbed to the top of my list of destinations I wanted to know more about. Thankfully, an outreach by Discover Coronado changed all that. First question upon arrival: How long would it take to get from the San Diego Airport (SAN) to the island? Was it complicated to go over the bridge? Any concerns were put to rest as the car reached the island of Coronado in 10 minutes, with a total of 15 minutes from airport pickup to my hotel at Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa. The Coronado Marriott is a beautiful and quiet 3 story property with beautiful views of the San Diego coast across the water. I arrived with lack of sleep after waking up early for the HMCC course before my flight, and the restaurant bartender was very kind and patient helping me find an appropriate caffeinated drink to make it through the rest of the day. For those of us that are into wellness (hello, OmniEra & SamTalia!) the resort has a TON of on site activities besides their spa and sauna area. There are watersports, tennis courts, and I FINALLY played pickleball for my first time! Dinner on site at Albaca restaurant was delicious with a variety of food, and they partner with local wineries both in Southern California and nearby Mexico, which is driving distance. Morning began with a short walk along the shoreline to the California Princess by Flagship San Diego for a breakfast harbor cruise, with narration to help explain all the fascinating history and key points of interest for the naval station area. After a morning meal, it was wonderful to walk around Coronado to our next stop at Glorietta Bay Inn. Coronado is VERY walkable between many hotels, shops, and the coastline and this was very welcome, as many conferences and vacations often leave you sitting for too long without much activity. Glorietta Bay Inn is a quaint property, ideal for small groups and associations that are looking for an alternative to a big box hotel. Just a couple of blocks away was the famous Hotel Del Coronado, which was undergoing a massive renovation to upgrade its historic rooms alongside Coronado Beach. There are several buildings on the sprawling property which can cater to a variety of attendees, whether you’re looking for a more classic or modern feel. Picturesque and Instagram-worthy photo ops are in abundance, and lunch in the round Cornet Room with panoramic views was a highlight. While there are several shops on property, downtown Coronado is also walking distance, with shops and restaurants aplenty.
Lowes Coronado Bay Resort may require a drive, but the expansive property with views that can’t be beat is worth it. Ideal for conferences and groups that want a little more privacy or to keep everyone on site, there are several sizes of meeting space and a large ballroom, and outdoor areas to take advantage of the year-round temperate climate. Dinner in the Avalon room had a view of San Diego’s gorgeous sunset that can’t be beat. The staff organized a team building experience, where my eyes watered up due to onion cutting by my teammate. (I wear onion goggles at home!) The staff was wonderfully hospitable, and the group’s dinner activity experience was a fun way to end our time together. Even if you’re not a cook - I was afraid I’d mess up cutting mushrooms - they made it inclusive so there was something for everyone. My final day on this beautiful island began at Feast & Fareway for a yummy breakfast before my first golf lesson. My grandpa was an avid golfer throughout his life, with many of my memories of him sitting on his recliner watching golf on television, and I have wanted to learn for several years. (Shout out to Veronica Rivera from San Diego Tourism who was the girl-power pro in our group). After getting our swing stance down, drives down the fairway, and put-put holes, it was time to depart. I’m extremely thankful to have had my long-awaited visit to discover all of what Coronado has to offer, and it surpassed my expectations. If you have a group that is looking for a retreat of any kind, from VIP to wellness, or just looking for a relaxing destination with so many conveniences such as easy access and walkability, I’d love to see what we can create together on this unique island that has so much to offer. Extra thanks to Danielle Rosetto from Discover Coronado and all the properties and suppliers that made this experience happen. I hope to work with you all soon!
