Sailing Through Choppy Political Waters: The Savvy Event Planner's Guide to 2025

Hey there, event industry rockstars! ✨
Let's face it – planning amazing experiences in today's climate requires more than just knowing the perfect appetizer pairings or how to negotiate with venues (though those skills are still 100% essential). Today's successful event planners need to be part diplomat, part economist, and part fortune teller!

The Elephant (and Donkey) in the Room
We're living in interesting times, friends. Political tensions are higher than my coffee intake on event day, and that's saying something! But rather than shy away from acknowledging this reality, let's talk about how to navigate it with grace and strategic thinking.

Budget Talks (The Not-So-Fun Kind)
Remember when your biggest budget concern was convincing clients that no, the centerpieces cannot magically cost half what flowers actually sell for? Those were simpler days!

Now we're dealing with:
  • Companies holding their purse strings a little tighter due to political uncertainty
  • Regional cost variations that might have more to do with politics than local economics
  • Clients needing to justify every expense in an environment where optics matter more than ever

Pro Tip:
Come armed with multiple budget scenarios and be prepared to explain not just the "what" but the "why" behind your recommendations. Transparency is your best friend here!
Picture
Location, Location, Political Calculation
Choosing where to host your event used to be about convenience, amenities, and that gorgeous view. Now? It's become a statement – sometimes one your client may not intend to make!
Some savvy approaches:
  • Consider presenting a geographically diverse set of options that span the political spectrum
  • Research local regulations and policies that might affect your event experience
  • Be prepared to discuss the pros and cons beyond just the venue itself

Building Bridges, Not Walls
Your event might bring together people from across the political spectrum (yes, even Uncle Bob and Cousin Sarah who can't be seated together at Thanksgiving). This is actually an opportunity to shine!
Try these approaches:
  • Focus on shared values and common goals
  • Create experiences that foster connection beyond political identities
  • Consider subtle ways to acknowledge diverse perspectives without centering divisiveness

The Silver Lining (Because We're Nothing If Not Optimistic!)
Here's the beautiful truth: skilled event planners have always been masters of bringing people together, creating magical moments, and solving impossible problems with a smile. These are exactly the skills our world needs right now!
By thoughtfully navigating today's landscape, you're not just planning events – you're creating spaces where connections happen, understanding grows, and maybe, just maybe, we remember that we're all humans trying to enjoy a good cheese plate and an inspiring speaker.

Your Toolkit for Success
  1. Stay informed – but set boundaries around news consumption
  2. Practice neutrality – develop the diplomatic skill of seeing multiple perspectives
  3. Prepare alternatives – flexibility is your superpower
  4. Focus on your purpose – remember why you're bringing people together
  5. Take care of YOU – because you can't pour from an empty cup!

Let's Talk!
I'd love to hear your experiences navigating the political landscape in your event planning process. Have you found creative solutions? Encountered unexpected challenges? Share your stories in the comments or email me directly.
Remember: In a world where everything seems divided, creating meaningful gatherings is more important than ever. You've got this – and OmniEra is here to support you every step of the way!

Until next time, keep making magic happen! ✨

Pueblo Perfection: How Santa Fe's Cultural Tapestry Creates Unforgettable Retreat Experiences

First Impressions of The Land of Enchantment
I was absolutely buzzing for my first-ever trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico (actually, my first venture into New Mexico altogether!). Thanks to the incredible Justin Cox from the Santa Fe CVB, who graciously collected me from Albuquerque airport and played personal tour guide during our hour-long drive into the city. Pro tip: While Santa Fe does have its own airport, it's quite small with limited flights, so most visitors fly into ABQ.

During our drive, Justin shared fascinating tidbits about the region's surprisingly high elevation (more on my battle with that later!), the nearby southern Rocky Mountains where you can actually ski (yes, it snows there!), the reservations along our route, the "other" Las Vegas in New Mexico, and the Sandia mountain range – meaning "watermelon" in Spanish due to the stunning sunsets that paint the hills in vibrant watermelon hues.

Entering downtown Santa Fe felt like stepping through a time portal into a different era and culture – one I'd only glimpsed in films before. Home to America's oldest church, the city's adobe pueblo buildings line narrow streets and rarely exceed 3-4 stories. I'll admit, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from New Mexico's capital – perhaps taller, more modern structures with a typical city vibe? Instead, I was delightfully surprised by how dedicated this wonderful town is to preserving its deep cultural heritage and history. Beyond downtown, the surrounding areas feel refreshingly rural, with expansive open spaces, horses, and charming ranch-style homes.
Where to Stay: Santa Fe's Most Group-Friendly Accommodations
The accommodations in Santa Fe beautifully balance luxury with cultural authenticity. Hotel Santa Fe, Inn & Spa at Loretto, and Inn on the Alameda all deliver the high-end amenities you'd expect while maintaining the area's cozy cultural charm.
My brief stay at Las Palomas was genuinely impressive. Perfect for slightly larger groups by Santa Fe standards, this wellness-focused resort (which is 100% up my alley!) offers complimentary yoga sessions and healthy breakfasts at their entirely non-smoking property. All guest rooms feature fireplaces, and visitors have access to a heated pool area and fitness center. With ample event and meeting space for groups up to 120, plus 63 sleeping rooms just three short blocks from walkable downtown, it's brilliantly positioned. They even provide complimentary shuttles for nearby destinations, including downtown transport when the weather turns chilly – as it certainly did during my visit! From check-in to bedtime, complimentary water and teas are readily available, and their hospitality is genuinely unmatched.

The remainder of my stay was at La Fonda on the Plaza in their downtown square and conference center. Wow! What an incredible location with a fascinating history! La Fonda occupies a treasured place in Santa Fe's story – part of a rich hospitality tradition predating American independence. City records indicate it sits on the site of the town's first inn, established when Spaniards founded the city in 1607, making it America's oldest hotel corner!

The most memorable Santa Fe gatherings happen at La Fonda, with over 20,000 square feet of elegant event space across eight breathtaking venues, suitable for any occasion. Authentic architectural touches like hammered tin chandeliers, inviting kiva fireplaces, and handcrafted terracotta tiles provide a genuine Santa Fe experience, while modern amenities such as WiFi throughout and a 24-hour business center ensure seamless professional functionality.
Beyond the stunning Southwestern-decorated event spaces, La Fonda offers the most delectable catering in Santa Fe. From classic New Mexican fare to hearty Italian specialties, their robust culinary selection can immerse your guests in regional culture or take them on a themed culinary journey.

I stayed in the property's newest section, the exclusive Terrace Inn. Its 15 lavish rooms and suites feature stylishly appointed furnishings that blend minimalist, clean lines with cultural elements and original regional art, including Navajo Chief hand-woven headboards and refinished 100-year-old heart pine flooring. Each room opens onto a private patio or balcony overlooking either the beautiful Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis de Assisi or the historic Loretto Chapel and sun-drenched Sangre de Cristo mountains. The Terrace also has its own dedicated and exceptionally hospitable concierge.

Exploring the Downtown Plaza
La Fonda sits directly on the Plaza, a vibrant gathering place for shoppers and culture enthusiasts alike. Needing shoes that could transition from networking reception to gym time (and finding the perfect pair!), I window-shopped the area until catching sight of someone wearing a work shirt that said "Olive Oils and Balsamics." My mission became finding this place! After tasting a delicious selection of flavored olive oils and balsamics, I decided my carry-on would become a checked bag, as I simply had to bring some bottles home.
The area features numerous shops offering jewelry, turquoise, and other handcrafted items that locals proudly promote. I was particularly delighted not to spot a single Starbucks or chain fast-food restaurant anywhere in the vicinity.

Unforgettable Group Activities
The Sky Railway provides a fantastically unique activity for both individuals and groups. Born in 2020 from the ashes of Santa Fe Southern, prominent local residents joined forces to preserve the historic 141-year-old railroad. Led by a creative team including George R.R. Martin, Sky Railway crafts entertainment adventure rail journeys that make it one of the most original short-line railroads in the country – perfectly befitting "The City Different." You can even customize activities and music throughout the train's various covered and open cars!
A Natural Sanctuary for Wellness Retreats
Santa Fe's unique energy makes it an exceptional destination for wellness-focused gatherings. The region's pristine high-desert landscape provides a natural sanctuary that instantly decompresses even the most stressed executives. Local resorts have embraced this tranquility, incorporating indigenous healing traditions alongside modern wellness approaches. From outdoor yoga sessions against the backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo mountains to specialized spa treatments utilizing local ingredients like blue corn, piñon, and sage, Santa Fe offers immersive healing experiences rooted in centuries of tradition. Many properties feature dedicated wellness spaces that seamlessly blend indoor comfort with outdoor beauty through floor-to-ceiling windows capturing those famous New Mexico sunsets. Beyond scheduled activities, the city's walkable layout, clean mountain air, and slower pace naturally encourage mindfulness—participants find themselves naturally disconnecting from digital distractions and reconnecting with themselves and their colleagues in more meaningful ways. For corporate groups seeking true reset and rejuvenation, Santa Fe's wellness offerings can be easily customized into your itinerary, whether as dedicated sessions or woven throughout your entire program as a consistent theme of balance and restoration.

A Quick Note on Elevation
One important heads-up: Santa Fe sits 7,000 feet above sea level, and while I've never had issues with elevation before (I live just hours from Tahoe, after all), this was a different story. During daylight hours, my symptoms were barely noticeable (perhaps a minor headache my first day), but nights were challenging. Returning to my hotel room by 9pm meant lying awake until at least 1am with my heart pounding harder and faster than normal, affecting my sleep and leaving me somewhat drained the next day. Fortunately, I had brought some Ylang Ylang essential oil that helped lower my heart rate a bit.
If you have blood pressure issues, consider this your friendly warning! Despite this unexpected challenge, it absolutely won't deter me from visiting again. I'm a devoted fan after my first trip and look forward to bringing more retreats and corporate groups to the area very soon.

Why Santa Fe Should Be on Your Event Planning Radar
Santa Fe offers historic surroundings, enduring cultures, timeless beauty, and sophisticated cuisine and hospitality, making it perfect for your next meeting, conference, or convention. Founded in 1610 and known as "The City Different," Santa Fe is America's oldest state capital. The city's signature adobe architecture, tree-shaded Plaza, and winding streets make it feel more like an international destination than one of America's most historic places.
The friendly locals, relaxed pace, pleasant climate, and warm hospitality make this distinctive city one of the country's top destinations. I simply cannot overstate how thoroughly I enjoyed my first (and long overdue) visit to Santa Fe – from the laid-back atmosphere and captivating pueblo buildings to the absolutely mouthwatering New Mexican cuisine, art, and rich culture.

Finding Balance: How SITE NCC and Silverado Resort Are Transforming Wellness in Incentive Travel

If you think wellness retreats are all green juice and silent meditation, let me be the first to tell you—you're delightfully mistaken. As a passionate member of SITE Northern California (Society for Incentive Travel Excellence) and someone who's navigated her own health journey, I can confirm that when wellness meets incentive travel, magic happens. And sometimes, that magic involves wine. (Hey, it's Napa, after all!)

When Passion Meets Purpose
My journey to wellness advocacy wasn't exactly straightforward. After battling severe health issues in my late 20s/early 30s, I emerged with a newfound perspective and a mission: to integrate genuine wellness experiences into the travel and events industry. Beginning my wellness certifications in 2013 and re-entering the events world in 2016 after a five-year "health sabbatical," I've been on a mission to redefine what wellness means in the context of exceptional travel experiences.
Fast forward to 2020, and I proudly added both CITP (Certified Incentive Travel Professional) and CMP (Certified Meeting Professional) to my credentials. Because if you're going to advocate for something, you might as well become an expert, right?
SITE NCC: Where Wellness Gets Serious Play
As part of SITE's Northern California chapter, I've found my tribe within the Social Impact Committee, where we focus on wellness, sustainability, and philanthropy. This isn't your typical "let's feel good about ourselves" committee—we're committed to creating meaningful change in how incentive travel approaches wellbeing.

In March, SITENCC hosted an educational program at Silverado Resort in Napa that showcased exactly what wellness in incentive travel can (and should!) look like. The day kicked off with a thought-provoking panel discussion over brunch, followed by immersive wellness activities that had everyone forgetting to check their phones, outside of taking pictures. If that's not success, I don't know what is.

The Well-X Lounge deserves its own paragraph (and quite possibly its own fan club). I could have spent all day in this wellness wonderland! Massage stations for every body part imaginable, intuitive card readings (my "Integrity" card gently suggested I might need to dial back the multitasking and embrace more meditation—message received, universe), facial treatments, wellness shots, and an activity on another room was - yes—wine tasting with chef-prepared bites. Because balance.

Silverado Resort: Where Wellness Meets Wow Factor
If you haven't visited Silverado Resort lately, let me paint you a picture: nestled in the heart of Napa Valley, this property masterfully balances rustic charm with sophisticated luxury. And those recently upgraded sleeping rooms? Complete with actual, real-life fireplaces that make you want to curl up with a good book and never leave.
What makes Silverado particularly spectacular for wellness-focused events is their thoughtful attention to detail. Their culinary team understands that "healthy options" doesn't mean "sad salad in the corner." During our event, the variety of nourishing yet indulgent food options throughout the day kept everyone energized without that dreaded mid-afternoon slump. Though the pickleball activity had to be nixed due to weather, the yoga session was in full effect.

Here's the thing about incorporating wellness into your incentive travel programs: it's not just a nice-to-have anymore; it's essential. When attendees feel their best physically and mentally, they engage more deeply with the experience you've created. They remember it longer. They return to work genuinely recharged rather than needing a vacation from their vacation.

Silverado Resort understands this intrinsically. Beyond your basic fitness center, the property offers championship golf courses, a world-class spa, tennis and pickleball courts, diverse dining options, cooking classes, wine tours, and even hot air balloon rides a stones throw away. All this while providing versatile event spaces that can accommodate groups of various sizes.
Taking Wellness Beyond the Buzzword
What I've learned through my work and my own health journey is that true wellness isn't about checking boxes—it's about creating environments where people can reconnect with themselves and each other. It's about understanding that sometimes wellness looks like a sunrise yoga session, and sometimes it looks like a perfectly paired wine tasting followed by a massage.

Special thanks to Fatima Sousi from SF Travel for being my personal host for this transformative day, and a shout-out to Claus Porto for the luxurious gifting soaps that reminded us all that self-care continues long after the event ends.

Ready to elevate your next incentive travel program with thoughtful wellness integration that your attendees will actually enjoy? Whether you're considering Silverado Resort, another Napa gem, or destinations beyond, I'd love to help you craft the perfect wellness-focused itinerary that keeps everyone engaged, energized, and eagerly awaiting your next event.
Because when wellness is done right, nobody misses the sad salad. Promise.

Boutique Luxury in Sonoma... the cooler months (pt 2 of 2)

While summer in Sonoma certainly has its charms, there's something undeniably magical about this wine country paradise when the temperatures drop. As your resident event and travel planning guru with an eye for the extraordinary, let me share why Sonoma County should be at the top of your cool-weather destination list – especially if you're craving boutique luxury experiences that go beyond the typical wine tour.

The Stavrand: Where Luxury Meets Laid-Back Perfection
Let's start with a property that stole my heart faster than you can say "pour me another glass." The Stavrand isn't just a hotel – it's a six-acre sanctuary that earned its Michelin Guide "exceptional" Two Key rating for good reason.
With just 21 rooms, this intimate estate is the perfect buyout opportunity for private retreats. Corporate teams seeking a transformative offsite or social groups celebrating special occasions will find themselves enveloped in attentive yet refreshingly unpretentious service.
My favorite touches? The daily welcome wine tasting happy hour from 5-6pm in their lobby (because why wait until dinner?) and the adorable s'mores kits for their fire pits. Pro tip: If you charm the staff, they might even open their wine tasting bar exclusively for your group after hours. Talk about VIP treatment!
The property's Russian River location puts you just ten minutes from charming Guerneville and within easy reach of coastal beaches, redwood hikes, and some of California's finest tasting rooms. But honestly, with the level of high-touch hospitality we experienced, you might never want to leave the grounds. Forest bathing in the redwoods, anyone?

The Madrona: Where History Meets Contemporary Elegance
For those who appreciate properties with a story to tell, The Madrona wraps you in magic from the moment you arrive. This stately manor welcomes curious travelers with an experience drenched in beauty, style, and thoughtful details.
I stayed in one of the carriage house rooms, which featured an artistic foyer wall design made with actual horse hair (talk about conversation starter!), heated bathroom floors (heaven during cooler months), a charming old-time radio, and fresh oranges plucked straight from property trees.
The restaurant boasts two Michelin stars, making it a culinary destination in its own right. Between gorgeous spaces perfect for intimate events and the possibility of learning to saber a champagne bottle (yes, that happened!), The Madrona delivers unforgettable experiences alongside its impeccable wine list. And if you're really lucky, you might find a whiskey and chocolate pairing waiting in your quarters after dinner.
Farmhouse Inn: Authentic Sonoma Luxury with Deep Roots
For good reason, Farmhouse Inn has been rated among California's top hotels and was once ranked #8 in the world by Travel + Leisure. Beyond the luxurious accommodations – ranging from spacious suites with vaulted ceilings and woodland views to charming, cozy retreats – what makes this property special is its authentic connection to Sonoma.
Owned by fifth-generation Sonoma farmers still deeply involved in the property experience, Farmhouse Inn offers connections that chain hotels simply can't match. A stay here feels less like checking into a luxury resort and more like joining a particularly stylish family with exceptional taste.
Don't miss the Wellness Barn, where holistic treatments incorporating local remedies provide the perfect antidote to our chaotic world. It's a space designed for slowing down, connecting with nature, and finding your unique balance – essential components for any successful retreat.
DaVero Farms & Winery: Where Sustainability Meets Absolutely Adorable Pigs
If you're looking for a venue that combines wine, food, and nature with a commitment to sustainability, DaVero Farms & Winery in Healdsburg delivers all that and more. Their biodynamic approach to farming and traditional winemaking methods produce Italian varietal wines and olive oils that truly express the terroir.
Their versatile spaces accommodate up to 200 guests, making it ideal for celebrations, corporate events, or educational seminars. But let's get to what you really want to know – yes, their pigs are ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE! I'm also still dreaming about their flavored olive oils and balsamics available in the gift shop. Trust me on this: do not leave without experiencing their wine and cheese & charcuterie pairings. Beg, if you have to, but best to plan ahead!
Vintners Resort: The Quintessential Wine Country Sanctuary
With 92 acres at your disposal, Vintners Resort transforms into your private sanctuary, complete with an Event Center boasting 10,000 square feet of indoor space plus gorgeous event lawns and outdoor venues that can host up to 250 guests. For the ultimate exclusive experience, their 78-room property is available for buyouts, giving your group complete access to restaurants, spa, and recreational amenities. Fill a relaxing day with strolls through the vineyard trail, rejuvenating spa treatments, and a friendly bocce ball competition. Don't miss John Ash, one of Sonoma's pioneering farm-to-table restaurants overlooking vineyard views. Lunch was delicious and the scene was breathtaking, even on a cloudy day!

Culinary Adventures: The Matheson & Roof 106
No luxury retreat is complete without exceptional dining, and The Matheson and Roof 106 in Healdsburg Plaza deliver in spades. Chefs Nate Davis and Dustin Valette have created a kitchen of creative collaboration, with an ever-changing menu reflecting micro-seasonal offerings that celebrate the land.
For a truly special evening with your group, opt for the chef's menu with wine pairings – your guests will thank you later. And you absolutely must try their clarified margarita – so crystal clear it looks like water but packs all the flavor – you have to taste it to believe it! The Mezzanine private dining space, floating above the main kitchen, provides the perfect vibrant yet intimate setting for winemaker dinners or corporate gatherings.
Ready to Elevate Your Sonoma Experience?
Whether you're planning a corporate retreat that actually gets results, a luxury incentive trip that motivates top performers, or a wellness getaway that rejuvenates body and soul, Sonoma County offers boutique experiences that go far beyond wine tasting (though there's plenty of that too!).
The cooler months reveal a different side of wine country – one where fireside chats, misty morning walks, and intimate indoor gatherings create connections that last long after the trip ends.
Ready to craft your perfect Sonoma County experience? As someone who's explored these hidden gems firsthand, I'd love to help you discover the perfect property and experiences for your next event or retreat. Because when it comes to luxury travel planning, sometimes you need someone who knows which pigs are the cutest and where to find that perfect glass of pinot noir.
Need help planning your next luxury retreat or event in Sonoma County? Let's chat about creating an unforgettable experience tailored to your unique needs!
